Step 1: Using a handsaw or circular saw slice off 3/4″ thick disc of wood from the birch log. (If you’re concerned about bugs, <a href="http://www.prettyhandygirl.com/2012/01/valentines_day_branches_from_tree_branches.html" target="_blank">you can bake them as shown here</a>.)<br />

Step 2: Sand wood slices smooth.<br />

Step 3: Using a drill with a 3/4″ circular bit drill out a small hole for the nipple piece, only about 1/4″ deep, be careful not to let the tip of the bit pierce through to the other side of the wood slice.<br />

Step 4: Apply E-6000 glue to one end of nipple and screw it into flange.<br />

Fashion Saturday among additions to stacked Fashion Week calendar

TORONTO - With the addition of two days to its calendar and the introduction of a consumer-focused event, the already sizable roster of fashionable festivities in Canada's largest style hub is poised to grow even larger.<br />

In a switch from its traditional Monday start, Toronto's World MasterCard Fashion Week is kicking off early presentations of spring-summer 2014 collections with hometown designer Mikhael Kale showcasing his luxe leather looks and more at an off-site show on Friday.<br />
<br />
Eight days later, Fashion Saturday is slated to make its debut. While Fashion Week presentations are typically geared toward buyers and media scouting out the latest trends for the warmer months ahead, the daylong event set for Oct. 26 is aimed at the public.<br />
<br />
Fashion Saturday is to feature a designer pop-up market showcasing pieces created by Canadian talents, and access to the fashion environment featuring live DJs, hair and makeup installations and trials and refreshments, with ticket packages at $75 and $150 apiece.<br />
<br />
Jarrad Clark, global creative director of IMG Fashion Events & Properties — whose organization spearheads Fashion Weeks in New York, Moscow, Berlin, Mumbai and Tokyo — said the consumer element has long been identified as a signature trait of the Toronto event, which they also oversee.<br />
<br />
"There seems to be a genuine appetite up there with the Canadian consumers and Canadian designers. And just evolving that into now having its own day, to really experience the full cycle of what happens at the tents during the week of the event felt right," Clark said in a recent phone interview from New York.<br />
<br />
"We're looking forward to seeing how they engage with not only the designers but the supporters of Fashion Week in that market."<br />
<br />
A centrepiece of Fashion Saturday will be the spring 2014 runway trends presentation which will encompass outfits highlighting notable looks for the season ahead, Clark said.<br />
<br />
"We've done these shows in various markets around the world, and they're really a nice piece of 'fashion-tainment' for everyone to get a snapshot of what took place during the week."<br />
<br />
Members of the public can purchase tickets for select runway shows during the week which will once again be held under temporary tents erected at David Pecaut Square, steps from Toronto's thriving theatre district in the heart of downtown.<br />
<br />
Fashion fans from near and far will be able to catch a glimpse of the new lines through dedicated social channels, with highlight reels from each show set to be updated daily on YouTube (www.youtube.com/user/WMCFashionWeek).<br />
<br />
Clark said they continue to look at streaming capabilities in all of their markets, with some experiments conducted in Canada. It's something he said they'll be seeking to do more of in future, aware of the eagerness among style-savvy social media users to have instant access to fresh content and looks from the runway.<br />
<br />
"They're much more engaged with what's going on via the online community now with our social media landscape, with our Twitter and our Instagrams," Clark said. "Eventually we'd love to see live broadcasts of our shows from the tents down at David Pecaut Square going out to a wider Canadian audience. That's definitely in the cards."<br />
<br />
Sisters Chloe and Parris Gordon — who have rebranded their contemporary womenswear and accessories brand Chloe comme Parris — are set to open shows inside the tents on Monday under their new moniker, Beaufille. They'll be followed by a pair of established homegrown womenswear designers: Pink Tartan helmed by Kimberley Newport-Mimran, and David Dixon showcasing his eponymous collection.<br />
<br />
While Montreal staged its Fashion Week in early September, designers and labels based in the style capital will be well represented in Toronto with Mackage, Melissa Nepton, Rudsak, Soia & Kyo and Travis Taddeo slated to present collections. On the affordable apparel front, Joe Fresh and new-to-Canada retailer Target are set to unveil their new lines.<br />
<br />
Joining them on the runway with fresh presentations are other homegrown designers and labels, including Caitlin Power, Lacerda, Matthew Gallagher, Hilary MacMillan, Klaxon Howl and Tatsuaki.<br />
<br />
Emerging designers from across Canada will be squaring off for a shot at style stardom — and a significant prize — in the Mercedes-Benz Start Up National Final. The winner will get the chance to stage a fully produced solo show next year in addition to an editorial feature in Fashion Magazine and continued mentoring from industry experts.<br />
<br />
Finalists include Montreal-based labels Hip and Bone, Pedram Karimi and Cecile Raizonville of Matiere Noire; P.E.I. sibling duo Hilary and Louanna Murphy of Dreamboat Lucy; Edmonton-based designer Malorie Urbanovitch; Toronto's Hussein Dhalla of HD Homme and Jonathan Shimoni of lifestyles brand Faded; and Vancouver Island's Eliza Faulkner.<br />
<br />
Toronto's semi-annual style showcase arrives far later on the already crowded fashion calendar than many of its high-profile predecessors, with similar events staged in New York, Paris, London and Milan which have long come and gone.<br />
<br />
Clark said the subject of "fashion fatigue" is one that was raised last season, but he doesn't regard the placement of the Canadian event later in the year as a negative.<br />
<br />
"This timing really allows local designers the chance to have their moment in time," he said.<br />
<br />
"Now, if we were going to come up and be competitive with a lot of the major Fashion Weeks around the world, a lot of the major editors and a lot of the major buyers aren't in town when we're doing it — so it's not necessarily a worthwhile investment.<br />
<br />
"The business of fashion has changed somewhat, so not all the designers wait to sell their collections for the time that they appear on the runway. Some of them are already dealing with retailers on an ongoing basis, with seasonal buyers and such, and it's a constant communication. So this really just provides the best opportunity for designers to get the best outcomes of what comes from the event."<br />
<br />
Clark sees a different focus for the Toronto showcase: helping local designers establish foundations for their businesses with the grander goal of eventually broadening beyond their own borders.<br />
<br />
"We're talking on an ongoing basis to the Canadian designers now. As their businesses start to grow and as they look at their business objectives from market to market, what opportunities exist for them? Which markets can they come participate with us in other Fashion Weeks, in other fashion platforms?<br />
<br />
"We're just trying to understand better their goals and objectives beyond just (those) two moments in time in Toronto."<br />

Read a Map

Knowing how to read a map isn't difficult. The symbols, topography lines and direction helpers all might require a little understanding, but the answers are all right there! - Check the map's orientation. Most maps are drawn with north located at the top.<br />
Sometimes this may be depicted using a compass rose. Or, it might simply be stated to be the assumption of   the map. If there is no indication to the contrary, presume it is north at the top.<br />
- Understand the scale of the map. The map scale shows you a ratio of map distance to real distance. These differ in size from map to map. Look for the scale, generally located on the side or bottom of the map. It will look something like 1:100,000, which denotes that 1 unit on the map is the equivalent of 100,000 units in real life. In general, the following scales work best as stated:<br />
Get a 1:25,000 map for walking<br />
Get a 1:190,000 map for driving<br />
Get a 1:24,000,000 map for seeing the whole world.<br />
To determine how far your destination is, use a ruler and the scale to measure how many miles it is from point A to B.<br />
For example, if your map's scale is 1:250,000, and the distance from point A to point B is 6 inches, the total distance is 6 * 250,000 = 1,500,000 inches. One mile is 63,360 inches, so the distance from point A to point B is 1,500,000 ÷ 63,360 = 23.7 miles.<br />
- Note the latitude and longitude. If you're traveling to the next town, this isn't so important. But if you are sailing, flying, or touring long distances, this might be useful.<br />
The latitude refers to the distance in degrees north or south of the equator.<br />
The longitude refers to the distance in degrees east or west of the Greenwich Meridian Line.<br />
Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, with each minute representing a nautical mile (or 1.15 land miles/1.85km). This means that one degree is the equivalent of 60 nautical miles or 69 land miles/111km.<br />
<br />
The latitude is represented by the numbers on the side of the map.<br />
The longitude is represented by the numbers at the top and bottom of the map.<br />
Where the latitude and longitude cross at your location is your point of reference.<br />
Latitude and longitude points are often used when there are no landmarks or roads to help determine a location.<br />
Tip: If you have trouble remembering which is which, the longitude lines are "long." The diameter of the longitudinal lines is roughly constant, where as the latitude lines get progressively smaller, the further they are from the equator.<br />
- Learn to read contour lines. How high or flat the land is is represented on the map with contour lines. Each line represents a standard height above sea level.<br />
When contour lines are close together, this means that the gradient is steep (the closer together, the steeper the gradient becomes).<br />
When the contour lines are further apart, the gradient is flatter, so the further apart they are located, the flatter the ground on the map.<br />
- Examine the legend. Most maps have a legend or key of symbols on the map itself. Get familiar with how your map represents data—that is key to understanding the rest of the map. In general, maps do the following:<br />
Lines in varying sizes, colors, and unbroken or broken lines depict roads, from lanes to freeways and all in between.<br />
Mountains tend to be shown as brown or green, and are height-dependent: darker at the bottom, lighter or white at the top.<br />
Rivers, lakes, the ocean and other water bodies are generally shown in blue.<br />
Forests, woods, parks, golf courses, or other large bodies of trees or green space are usually depicted in green.<br />
Towns and city limits are often shown in a pastel pink or yellow, and the size and boldness of their names indicate relative population size or importance.<br />
Buildings tend to be shown in gray or black colors.<br />

3. Using the Map to Get You from A to B<br />
<br />
- Figure out where you are. You have your map and you're ready to use it. Now you need to figure out where you are before you can plot where you're going.<br />
You can do so by matching what you can see in real life with what is on the map. Common features that help identify your location on a map includes road names, landmarks and prominent natural features, like rivers.<br />
If you have a compass, align the map with the direction shown on the compass. Or, use the sun or markers to help you do this.<br />
A good way to find your location if you are unsure is to find two landmarks. For example, if you can see a prominent tower in front of you, and a city at 45 degrees to your left. Find those two landmarks on the map. Align the map so that the point in front of you is at the top of your map, and draw a straight line from that point down. Then draw a line from the diagonal landmark, till it intersects the first landmark. The point that they intersect is roughly your location. Look for closer landmarks to zero in on your position<br />

- Find your destination. Now it's time to figure out where you want to go.<br />
If you just want to go from one place to another, all you need to do is to plot that single route out.<br />
If there are several places you intend to go to, you may want to plan your route in such a way that you visit all the places in the shortest possible manner. You can do so by going to the nearest places first after which you will go to the further places.<br />
- Use the map's index. Some maps, such as a Thomas Guide, have indexes stating the location of certain places on a map. This location could be grid numbers or pages.<br />
Take note of a map's scale so that you can estimate your travel time, and if you are taking longer then you expected, you can stop to recheck your map.<br />
Don't forget to check the map's legend so will know what you are looking at.<br />
- Plot the route out. Now that you have figured out where you want to go, plot the route for your first leg of your journey.<br />
Use can also use a pencil, if you don't want to permanently mark up your map.<br />
- Travel to the desired spot with the map. Keep tabs of checkpoints along the way—if you miss a turn, you could be seriously off course before you realise it.<br />
